Meal replacements are mainly prescribed by doctors for obese people for a medical weight loss diet. Depending on the arrangements, they can be conducted four to five times in a day. The replacements include various soups and puddings. At the end of the day, one or two meals are offered which consist of a small piece of lean meat together with large amounts of vegetables and salads. These replacements are taken within two to three hour interval and accompanying them with more than 6 glasses of water per day. These programs are suitable for both men and women. This replacement plan is not a medium to low calorie diet and helps in losing between two to five pounds per week.

These medical plans also include the use of appetite suppressors that reduce tremendously carbohydrate cravings. For example, a serotonin suppressant is used to stabilize this hormone because an imbalance in secretion leads to food cravings. Serotonin is a chemical that transmits nerve impulses in the brain and its low levels are known to induce carbohydrate cravings. So suppressing it aids in keeping away cravings. These suppressants must only be given under strict physician prescriptions because they can greatly interfere with ones feelings and moods if used inappropriately.
